Rebranding MicroCyte

How you can change MicroCyte to your clients corporate colours

A few people have recently asked me if it is possible (or even permitted) to change MicroCyte's default branding. Generally we're pretty happy for people to change MicroCyte's appearance, so long as you are doing it as part of a website build. If you are rebranding MicroCyte in order to sell it on as your own wonderful inline editing CMS then we wont be happy about that. We do, however, recognise the need for agencies and freelancers to be able to make the CMS of the website they are building match their clients corporate colours or incorporate their clients logo.

So with that said, how do you go about changing the colours and logos in MicroCyte? Pretty much any element of MicroCyte can be changed, due to the fact that CSS is used extensively to style the panels and header bar. You'll find all the CMS graphical assets in the /cmsincludes/images directory including original photoshop .psd files where applicable. The CSS for the CMS is kept mostly in the /cmsincludes/cssstyles.css but digging around you'll find there are some inline styles that have crept in over time, these should not effect branding though.

The whole CMS hovering panels system is controlled through the /cmsincludes/panels.php script and its supporting includes in the /cmsincludes/panels/ directory. Digging though these will quickly give you an Idea of what styles relate to what panels.

Shortcuts
If you dont want to dig through hundreds of lines of CSS and PHP to rebrand the basic things these shortcuts should help out!
  • Change the titlebar colour: The title bar is a red gradient .jpg file found at /cmsincludes/images/adminbackground.jpg. The associated style in the style sheet is called#CMSheaderdiv
  • Change the MicroCyte logo: The logo image is found at /cmsincludes/images/mastheadlogo.jpg and its associated img tag is found at line 8 of /cmsincludes/panels.php
  • Change the panel background: The panel background image is found at: /cmsincludes/images/control_tab.gif. Be careful about changing this one as it can take some time to whip through the other panel styles and make everything look right.
Changing those styles and images should give you the ability to significantly change the appearance of MicroCyte. Make sure you know what your doing though because there is a danger that changing the functional aspects of the CMS styles could break the way the CMS works. Make sure you take backups of everything before you get stuck in!
